As a Windows computer user, you’ve probably noticed that from time to time your computer slows down. It becomes almost unresponsive, it takes forever to get your programs to load, windows to open or even the words that you type in a text document or Word document seem to lag. While your slow computer syndrome may actually be attributed to a number of things - there is something that you can do, even if you’re an absolute computer “newbie” that may make a significant difference in your computer’s speed: rebooting your computer.
“Always on” internet and how it misleads us as PC users
In today’s society - “always on” broadband internet connections are the norm - and really it seems that many computer users tend to leave their computers running for days, weeks or months on end without a single reboot or shutdown, and for certain computers, this can really cause significant speed problems. Bottom line - faster internet connections have given us the “I want it now, I get it now” mentality, and waiting for your computer to boot up really flies-in-the-face of this line of thinking. However, giving your PC a break and rebooting from time to time may actually improve your PCs speed, and in some cases, it’s the only course of action keeping you from enjoying a faster computer.
Why rebooting helps to speed up your computer
Really, there are a number of reasons why rebooting your PC will help to improve performance, but the biggest reason is because it can restore any “lost” memory. Sometimes throughout the course of using your computer, programs will remain loaded even after you close them for whatever reason, certain applications may have memory “leaks” that will eat away at your available computer memory or you just have inadequate computer memory to begin with.
Rebooting your PC can help to restore your computer’s memory to an optimal state and thus will increase your PCs responsiveness and speed.
It’s an easy step and one that isn’t really addressed a whole lot… but one easy way to speed up your computer is as simple as rebooting it from time to time.
