How To Install Windows 98

What you will require to do this walkthrough is 





  1. A Windows 98 CD




  2. A Computer




  3. Your Chosen CD-Rom Boot Media








  • The Microsoft Windows 98 Install will prepare to run a system check, after you have completed the routine for your CD-Rom boot and running the setup.exe file. Press enter to run the scandisk.




  • The “Windows 98 Setup” screen will now appear. Click “Continue” to move on.




  • The Setup wizard will now run through.





  • Windows 98, Software License Agreement will now appear. Read through it and when finished click on yes if you agree (Continue with setup) or click on No if you disagree (This exits out of setup)




  • Windows 98 Setup Wizard will appear, click “next” to continue.  




  • The “Choose Directory” screen well now appear, this is where you will install windows into, C:\Windows is the default, you can change this if needed. Click next to continue.




  • Now watch as windows prepares the directories and checks for free disk space





  • The “Setup Options” window will appear. For most Desktop users select Typical install (Default) or for laptop users select Portable. The other two options speak for themselves. Click next to continue.




  • Now put in your Certificate of Authenticity, located on your Windows 98 Manual. Click next once typed in to continue




  • Now user name and company name, fill in as needed. Click next to continue.




  • The “Analyzing Your Computer” screen will appear, leave blank and click next.




  • Windows will now search for plug and Play devices.





  • The “Windows Components” screen will appear, leave defaults and click next.




  • You will now be prompted to make a Startup disk. Insert a blank disk and click next. 




  • The system is ready to create the start up disk. Click next to begin.




  • Windows will now prompt you for a disk. Label this Windows 98 Boot Disk and click OK.





  • A few minutes later the disk will be created. Click OK after removing the Disk.




  • Windows will now continue copying files.




  • Once it reaches 100% the “Finishing Setup” screen will appear, the system is ready for restart. Click on “Finish” to proceed.




  • If you forgot to take your boot disk out, a screen will appear to remind you to remove it, take the disk out and click OK for the computer to reboot.





  • Windows 98 will continue to update and copy files.




  • It now searches for all your plug and play devices.




  • Now if you have a Network card and the system has installed it from it’s own drivers then the “Network” screen will appear. Click OK




  • If you have a network card that windows has installed then you must fill in the Computer Name, Work Group and description. Any Problems with this then talk to your network Administrator. 





  • Windows will then continue to copy files.




  • If your prompted for Hardware drivers, I would advise to cancel and install once in windows.




  • System will update a few more files and shortcuts .




  • Now select your Time Zone, then click apply and close to finish.





  • And now the printer Wizard, once again just cancel and install later, when in windows.




  • Almost done, Click OK at the “Finished Configuring your system” screen to continue. And the System will reboot.




  • On reboot, if network card installed, you will be prompted for user name and password for your Network. Enter as needed.




  • Leaving password blank means that windows will not prompt you again for a windows password.




  • If your version of Windows Has IE4.0 then this will ask you for information when you first reach the desktop. First select your country and click next. 





  • IE 4.0 will start copying files.




  • IE 4.0 will setup items and then reboot the system..




  • You will finally arrive at your desktop. It’s now time to start setting up your drivers.
